TLC for Frazzled KidsTLC for FRAZZLED KIDS is a practical guide for anyone dealing with children who have experienced trauma, stress, or the frustrating challenges of living in this complex world. Today’s children, from every background, contend with high levels of stress and emotional vulnerability. Often the results are a wide range of acting-out behaviors.

TLC for Frazzled Kids was originally developed for children in classrooms. This unique methodology for dealing with children during frazzled times evolved from years of hands-on experience. It is a guide for parents, teachers, therapists, child-care workers, or anyone who deals with children. TLC for Frazzled Kids is applicable in a variety of settings. The methods encourage problem solving, resourcefulness, and resilience. Children learn effective calming strategies and are guided toward the expression of feelings in safe and productive ways.

When Nancy Goodell became a teacher in an inner-city school serving at-risk middle-school students, none of the teaching techniques she practiced at the time seemed to work. Her students exhibited dangerous, aggressive, and self-injurious behaviors. Others just gave up, too discouraged to face academic and social challenges. Even though she had been well trained, she struggled desperately to guide her students through their days safely while also working toward academic growth.

Over time, she developed a model that has its foundations in child development, learning theory, and a psychotherapeutic process that supports emotional, cognitive, and behavioral integration. TLC for Frazzled Kids has been refined over her forty-five years of experience as a teacher, therapist, school director, mother, and grandmother. Nancy currently works with children, adults, and families who are facing life transitions.

Ann Garrett first became involved with this model as she implemented crisis intervention at the therapeutic school where Nancy and Ann worked together. Ann brought with her years of experience dealing with severely emotionally disturbed children who had been physically and sexually abused. She had worked in a variety of positions in a residential treatment center connected to the therapeutic school. Previously, she had worked at therapeutic day camps, in a juvenile detention center, as a youth probation officer, in a school for severely autistic children, and with youth on the Shoshone Indian Reservation. Ann is the author of six published children’s books and works at a therapeutic school as achildren’s librarian and special education substitute teacher.

Ann and Nancy have collaborated on this project recognizing the overwhelming nature of working effectively with children when they exhibit out of control behaviors—temper tantrums, resistance, verbal outbursts, or physical aggression. They are committed to the support of those who are searching for positive ways to interact with children.

TLC for Frazzled Kids offers suggestions that proactively create an environment for success. As a practical guide, it provides a step-by-step process that can be practiced during calm times. The application becomes a comfortable routine during challenging situations. As a result, children develop functional coping strategies that are good for a lifetime. They learn to identify the underlying causes of their frazzled feelings and responses. They discover ways to calm themselves, focus attention on the task at hand, and find safe and successful ways to address their needs.
